合同的生效日期在合同中非常重要，合同有效期一般都是以合同生效日作为基准日。合同中约定的当事人的权利义务享有或承担的起始日期都是以合同的生效日作为计算基准日。

不过，如果这种义务是约束自己的客户，则最好约定一个合同终止后的保密最高时限，比如：

因此，保密义务在合同终止后三年内继续存在，但三年后该义务解除。

不管是英式英语或美式英语，在书写日期时，都遵循如下规则：
●关于日子，可用基数词(1、2、3&)，也可以用序数词(1st, 2nd,3rd&); ●关于月份，需要写出英文名称;
●关于年份，不能缩写，需要写出完整的年份，例如，不能将2014写成14; ●关于格式，无论采用何种形式，年份与月日之间需要用逗号隔开;
●关于简写，①日期不能完全采用阿拉伯数字书写，因为英式英
语和美式英语日期的年月日顺序不一样，完全用数字书写，则容易无法辨认月日，如06/06/,2014;②但日期可以采用月份简写的方式书写，如6th aug.,2014或aug. 6,2014。
在法律翻译中，泛瑞翻译认为：
●在合同等正式文本的正文中出现的日期，最好采用月份完整书写的形式，显得更正式;
●无论采用何种形式，同一文本中所有日期应统一为一种形式;
●如果目标读者或客户为英国人时，最好还是采用英式形式吧，毕竟英国人对他们的语言还是非常自豪的，而对美式英语更多的是不屑的态度，所以采用英式形式，即使不至于delight可能属arrogant的英国人，但至少不会在他们心里留下疙瘩吧。
